The Sarah Gignilliat 1807 Sampler, part of the collection of the Roswell Historical Society, was stitched by Sarah in 1807 at the age of eight.

The original sampler was worked with silk threads on linen, measures 13” wide by 12” high, and is hemstitched on all sides. The ground fabric is 28 vertical threads by 30 horizontal threads per inch. There are several unique features on the sampler. The verse, “Prayer of a Wise Heathen,” is not frequently seen on samplers and can be found in books of hymns and poetry from the era. Note that Sarah used what is called a long “s” in the verse “best” and “supply.” This convention is generally not seen on samplers worked in the nineteenth century. Sarah honored her mother, Sarah, and her late father, James, in the center cartouche. The ”J” looks like an “I”.

This historical reproduction, created by Magnolia Sampler Guild as part of their educational program, provides a color palette using either DMC cotton or AVAS Soie d’Alger silks. The sampler measures 184 stitches wide by 170 stitches high. Stitches used are Cross Stitch, Algerian Eye, and Satin Stitch. It is recommended for intermediate level stitchers.

All proceeds from the sale of this chart will be donated to the Roswell Historical Society.  Only a few copies remain and there are no plans to re-print at this time.
